Postgame Observations: Georgia defeats Ole Miss 42-7 — Athens Community news

No. 2 Georgia defeated No. 10 Ole Miss 42-7 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Here are some observations from The Red & Black. Stockton and Taylor lead Georgia’s offensive onslaught Georgia’s offense had a slower start to the second half after opening the game with three consecutive touchdown drives, and although Dwight Phillips Jr. helped move Georgia down the field with a 14-yard run on the opening possession, the drive was ended after three incomplete passes from quarterback Gunner Stockton, forcing a punt. The offense got an opportunity after Rasean Dinkins forced a fumble on a sack of quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, giving Georgia possession in a good field position. The Bulldogs took advantage using runs from Jaden Reddell, Sacovie White-Helton and Nate Frazier to move inside the 10-yard line. Stockton then scrambled to extend the play before finding Talyn Taylor in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown. The score marked Stockton’s third passing touchdown of the night and extended Georgia’s lead to a comfortable 35 points. Georgia wasted little time responding to Ole Miss’s first touchdown of the night. On the Bulldogs’ next possession, Stockton connected with Taylor once again for a 65-yard touchdown pass, giving Georgia a 42-7 lead and ending any remaining doubt about the result. The Bulldogs have now eclipsed the 40-point mark in two away games this year, after earlier thrashing Arkansas 45-17. Bulldogs’ defensive front overwhelms Ole Miss Ole Miss came into Saturday with one of the SEC’s most dangerous offenses, but Georgia spent the night making it look anything but. The Bulldogs continued to make life difficult for Chambliss throughout the third quarter, forcing him to hurry throws and limiting the Rebels’ ability to sustain drives. Chris Cole added another sack, bringing Georgia’s total to three against Chambliss after the Bulldogs failed to sack him in either meeting last season. Georgia’s defensive pressure was relentless, eventually leading to another costly turnover for the Rebels. Dinkins brought down Chambliss for a sack, forcing a fumble that he recovered and returned 17 yards to the Ole Miss 22-yard line. The fumble marked Georgia’s second forced turnover of the night and gave the Bulldogs great field position heading into their next drive. After holding Ole Miss scoreless for most of the game, Georgia’s defense finally gave up a touchdown in the fourth quarter when Ole Miss running back Shekai Mills-Knight broke through for an 8-yard rushing score. The touchdown cut Georgia’s lead to 35-7 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Ole Miss’s seven points are its fewest in a home game since November 2018, when the Rebels scored just three points against Mississippi State. Georgia’s defense has kept the Ole Miss offense in check throughout the night, putting together one of its strongest performances of the season. Bulldogs settle the score with Ole Miss, with major SEC implications Georgia had more than just another SEC victory on the line Saturday night. After Ole Miss ended the Bulldogs’ playoff run last season, Saturday’s matchup served as a revenge game, giving Georgia a chance to respond to the team that sent it home. With Stockton and Chambliss once again leading their respective offenses, Georgia was able to rewrite the ending of last year’s meeting. This time, the Bulldogs came away with the win, turning last season’s disappointment into a statement victory on the road. The win also carries major implications for Georgia's place in the SEC race. With Tennessee defeating Kentucky, the Georgia victory leaves the Bulldogs alone atop the conference standings as the only team with one loss in SEC play. With the regular season entering its final stretch, Georgia has put itself in a strong position to compete for a spot in the SEC Championship Game.  With No. 1 Miami falling to No. 11 Notre Dame tonight, the Bulldogs are almost certain to take over the top spot in the next edition of the CFP rankings.
